My Acoustic Diaries: A Few Feet Away

“Rain on the window, strings under my fingers — finding my way back to myself, one chord at a time.”

I thought I was feeling like myself again. I thought I was back in the room, in my life, fully present. But then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was in the music room, rain rattling against the windows, heavy, insistent. Each drop a sharp reminder that the world outside keeps moving, whether I’m ready or not. The air was thick, clinging uncomfortably to my skin. Humid. Hot. Wet soil wafting in from outside. The smell of dampness, of life lingering after the storm, mixed with the faint metallic tang of the guitar strings. My fingers pressed against the frets, callused, raw, familiar. And a small sigh escaped, unwanted, betraying some part of me I was trying to keep quiet.

I picked up the song I’ve been carrying for months, maybe years — Trapped in My Head. I wasn’t just playing it. I was feeling it, living inside it, letting it hit every corner of me, letting it carve its mark into my chest, let it open the hollow spaces that had grown inside me.

Dm – Bb – C – A.
Each chord a heartbeat. Each vibration a pulse, a weight, a tether to the world I sometimes feel disconnected from.

"My thoughts are a war I can’t outrun. Every truth I’ve faced comes undone. My pulse keeps time with the pain I hide. Where’s the calm, where’s my quiet side?"

Even as I drifted, I felt each lyric slam against my chest like a train. Sounds blurred. Faces blurred. Life blurred. I was watching from the doorway, a spectator, a ghost, a man removed from his own body.

Maybe that’s what burnout really is. Your body shows up. Your life shows up. Your work shows up. But your heart… hasn’t.

Court dates loom like storm clouds over every plan. Jail, once again, a possibility that drags my chest down and presses it flat against the floor. Momentum slips between my fingers. Music releases, life responsibilities, creative hubs I’m planning — they all wait for me to catch up, and I can barely hold my own attention.

I internalize everything. So much. So many pressures, so many expectations. I try not to ruin anyone else’s day with the weight I carry. And yet, it sits heavy inside me, like molten metal. It flows through my veins, settles in my chest, in my gut, in the hollow space behind my eyes where clarity used to live. Every fleeting memory, every passing expectation, every “what if” loops inside me, pressing me into myself until I feel almost like I could dissolve.

Then there’s her.
The one person who ever made me feel like myself.
The gravity of her connection — the way it pulls on me even when I’m a thousand miles away from being fully present — threads through my chest like a live wire. I’m doing everything I can to stay connected — and I’m getting nowhere.
The ache threads through every chord, every note, like a phantom limb I can’t shake. It’s a tug so real, so sharp, it threatens to undo the tiny tether that keeps me here.

I fingerpick the first verse, slowly, almost reverently:

Dm – My thoughts are a war
Bb – I can’t outrun
C – Every truth I’ve faced comes
A – undone
Dm – My pulse keeps time with the
Bb – pain I hide
C – Where’s the calm, where’s my
A – quiet side

I let the chords linger. Let them sink into my chest, into my mind.
I feel dizziness creeping in. Time warps. Conversations from earlier replay like ghost recordings. I remember realizing mid-sentence that I wasn’t talking — just watching myself from a few feet away.

Chorus:

Dm – Trapped in my head — it’s
Bb – where I reside
C – Haunted by the things I’ve
A – denied
Dm – Darkness moved in,
Bb – love lost its way
C – Trapped in my head,
A – I fade each day

I strum it open, letting it breathe, letting it fill the space. Each chord a bridge between the room and the drifting, clouded space inside my head. The weight of her presence threads through every vibration, every echo. Even in absence, she is here — a tether I can reach for even when I feel completely untethered.

Verse 2:

Dm – Faces from my past
Bb – still call
C – Echoes of the nights I
A – gave it all
Dm – Memories burn where
Bb – they should fade
C – Why can’t I escape
A – what I made?

Bridge, palm-muted, single-note picking:

Bb – Maybe I’m the one who won’t
C – let go
Dm – Half-alive with nothing to
A – show
Bb – Searching for a flame that
C – sets me free
Dm – But I’m scared of what peace
A – might be

I pause. The rain falls harder. My pulse echoes the Dm chord. Sighs escape unbidden.
I feel invisible. People don’t notice. Conversations drift away. Messages go unanswered. And yet — stubbornness. Defiance. I cannot let this win.

Each chord repeats. Dm. Bb. C. A.
Fingerpicking, strumming, letting it echo like a mantra.
Even as my mind drifts, even as my body feels removed, music is my lifeline. My tether. My pulse.

Court. Jail. Pressure. The future stares at me with a taunting smile.
I drift again. Conversations from earlier float in and out. I notice that even when I try to connect, I’m not fully present. I’m a quiet observer, standing a few feet away, watching life happen without me.

And still, there’s her. The one person who made me feel like myself.
Her connection presses against me, heavy, real, unavoidable — a gravity I can’t resist.
I reach toward her through music. Through chords. Through every heartbeat pressed into Dm – Bb – C – A.
The ache threads through each note. Each vibration a reminder that I am tethered to someone who feels like home, someone whose presence alone reminds me there is a world beyond the fog.

Outro:

Dm – My mind’s the cell, my heart’s the
Bb – crime
C – Counting the beats I’ve left behind
Dm – The mirror stares — I turn away
C – Still trapped in my head, another day

Even as I drift, as life spins without me, I find a quiet tether.
A small connection to myself. To music. To life.

Rain rattles. Heat clings. Dampness presses against my skin.
Callused fingers move over familiar strings.
Each micro-moment is an anchor.
Each sigh, each fleeting flash of memory, each chord a lifeline.

Some weeks, you aren’t fully present.
Some weeks, even music, even tether, feels like it’s just out of reach.
Some weeks, the ache of the one person you love threads through every vibration of every chord.
And yet…

Even from a few feet away, that’s enough.
Even in dizziness, even in drifting, even in the heat and damp, even under the weight of court dates, jail, emotional pressure, invisible labor, and longing… I am here.
Even if my body’s just going through motions, my heart still reaches through the strings.
I am alive. I am tethered. I am fighting.

The chords repeat. Dm. Bb. C. A.
Fingerpicked. Strummed. Letting them linger.
Letting the weight settle.
Letting the ache thread through.

Music. Work. Connection. Defiance. Hope. Stubbornness. Life. Survival.
Even from a few feet away.

I press the strings again. I whisper the lyrics to myself.
I feel them hit my chest like a train.
I am alive. I am tethered. I am here.

Even a few feet away, it is enough.
